Vocational students advertise for next years intake

As the year comes to a close, Vocational training students and their teachers went for advertisement in the communinity. The porpuse of this activityis to inform the community about the courses and services we offer. It is also a time for the students to learn to interact with the community, sharpen their commmunication skills as they interact with different people and try to convince them why they should join our Training. The teachers were there to guide them as they walked around Kibera. 

Most  young people in Kibera are unskilled and unemployed, idleness leads to boredom, and many choose drugs and other ills to medicate their boredom. When young people such as KTDP voational training students go out and speak to them, they are able to challenge their peers to get some training and have hope that they too can make it.

Success Stories: Linet Kareha

When Linet Kareha came to KTDP in March 2009, she was working as a housegirl and seeking to find her place in society. .She enrolled and was taken for a one year course in Hairdressing and Beauty. During the training the teachers quickly recognised her leadership skills and made her a class prefect.
By the time she was finishing her course she was housed by a friend and desperate for a job. KTDP took her in as an intern where her skills continued to develop. In 2010 as a result of the growing number of students in the project she was employed as an assistant tutor. KTDP has continued to empower the community as well as its staffs.
Linet has been instrumental in the growth of Hairdressing and connects well with the young students . Many young girls in Kibera grow up in poverty and in trying to escape from such end up in early marriages. Some go as far as getting involved in prostitution. KTDP offers such young girls training which empowers them to maintain their dignity as human beings, seek employment or even start their own small businesses.
Linet is another example of the positive transformation your gift has brought in Kibera.

Success Stories: Charles Chola

This week we intend to look at how your donations  to KTDP have impacted and changed the lives of the children and young people of Kibera. We will start with the story of Charles Chola.
Charles Chola finally graduated. He was among the three students who tied for the first position in Pre-Unit class. Charles came to KTDP in 2009 in a sorry state. He had been bitten by a snake and had a festering wound that was threatening his limbs and the rest of his body.  His parents who live in Kibera could not afford to pay for a surgery which in total costs around 40,000shs. Charles had to sit on the side and watch the other children play because the wound kept getting worse.
 Through KTDP, Charles underwent surgery at Kijabe Hospital where the doctors operated on his leg and made him an artificial shoe; he can now play with his friends and would often been seen playing football during play time. It was a great joy to see him receive his certificate and a present for being the top performing student in Pre-Unit. What would have turned out to be a tragic case of an amputated leg become a story of great triumph, and with such a determined heart and brilliant mind, Charles is destined for greatness in the future. We wish Charles the best as he goes on to class one.

Salon students

Continuing Salon students are still in session doing their practical work upto 15th this month. They are determined to finish the year in high pitch and do well like the previous group,who graduation on 11.11.11.

Social activities

KTDP has identified the need to establish more social activities from next year. These will include; following those under sponsorship programme, homevisits, counselling, followup on students dropout which is so rampart in kibera due to early pregnancies, early marriages, child abuse among others.

Cynthia will be our Social worker.She has 4years experience in social work. We welcome Cynthia to the KTDP family.

Tailoring 2011 class farewell

Tailoring class held a farewell party for the 2011 class on 2nd Dec. The students started their grade test exams today. We are confident that they will pass like the previous group. KTDP has since inception offered quality training that is geared towards providig relevant skills to the people of Kibera. Grade test are Goverment of Kenya technical exams and therefore recognised by the ministry of Education. Qualifying in the various levels gives our students confidence and offers them a better chance with employers around the country. Teacher Judy and Priscila urged the candidates to be confident in the exam room as they had adequately covered the sylabus. We wish the 2011 candidates the best as they sit for their exam.

Sponsorship programme

Vivian is one of the young people in our sponsorship program. She is in college, doing a course in Catering and Hotel management. She will be sitting her first level exam (certificate) starting from 5th this month. This exam will help her to proceed to the next level. We wish her all the best in her exams.

In 2012 KTDP have a target of sponsoring 150 students in primary, 15 students in secondary and 3 students in college or university.

Education means change

KTDP see education as a cornerstone of social and democratic development. In our opinion, education is the best weapon against poverty. Education is not just about acquiring knowledge; education is also about attitudes such as respect and tolerance. And knowledge is the key to change. It’s the key to change individuals, families and a nation as a whole.

Many parents in Kibera cannot afford to take their children to secondary and college. Many can’t even afford to take them to primary school. We will give parents the opportunity to fulfill their dreams for their children. We truly desire to help – even if it’s only a few.

Transparency International’s 2011 Corruption Index

Corruption continues to plague too many countries around the world, according to Transparency International’s 2011 Corruption Perceptions Index released on the 1st December 2011.

Kenya has relinquished its position as the most corrupt country in East African and Kenya is ranked as the 154 most corrupt nation in the world.

Corruption is the abuse of entrusted power for private gain.  The Transparency International focuses on corruption and abuse of public power in the public sector, or corruption which involves public officials, civil servants or politicians. It includes bribery of public officials, kickbacks in public procurement and embezzlement of public funds. As such, it covers both the administrative and political aspects of corruption

Planning for Evaluation

This month main activity for KTDP is this year's evaluation and planning for next year. We evaluate each individual project and the programme as a whole. This will help us to know the areas that need special considerations in the coming year. Today Admin staffs met to plan for this activity which involve all KTDP staffs and stakeholders. Later this monthe we will have our anual evaluation seminar.
